Conversations That Matter
Over the years I have heard Denver is second only to Washington, D.C.in the number of associations, industry trade groups and nonprofits headquartered in the area. Fortunately, MGA Communications has had the privilege of working for a variety of these professional and membership organizations.
Following is the final portion of Jeff’s article that first appeared in ICOSA magazine’s Energy Issue earlier in 2014. A previous blog post covered the first four elements of effective corporate giving.
Corporate giving is a key metric and a vital component of an effective Corporate Social Responsibility program. This is particularly true for businesses in energy exploration and production because of the heightened public scrutiny their operating methods receive. Strategic corporate giving goes beyond making a donation. It is an investment. Helping build vibrant, healthy and safe communities in which a company operates is foundational to securing and maintaining that always-important social license to operate.

Below is the third in a series about the skills and expertise MGA’s team members gained from their experience in the service industry.Before becoming a research rock star at MGA, I played bass in a variety of different bands. In high school there was Nobody’s Children, a band that played at high school dances and fraternity and sorority parties during the school year. Then the summer I graduated from high school I joined a more professional band (the Chancellors was a nine-piece horn band) and I began performing year round.
From checking your emails and calendar to live tweeting and posting photos from special events, a smartphone has become indispensable for any PR pro. But what are some apps that are particularly helpful? A few previous lists got me thinking about the ones I find most helpful on my iPhone. While there are a few necessities (Facebook and Twitter) and others that I want to learn to incorporate (like Doodle, for meeting scheduling), here are a few I use the most. All of them have free versions (though some offer in-app purchases) and most are available on iOS and Android (and in some cases Windows Phone and BlackBerry).
Last month’s 116th National Western Mining Conference & Exhibition at the Colorado Convention Center had a wide array of news about mining in Colorado. The theme of the conference was Moving Forward from the World’s Mining Capital. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., was the keynote speaker the opening day. As a senator and former governor of a major coal mining state, he had much to say about safety in U.S. mines (the Sago Mine explosion happened while Sen. Manchin was governor of West Virginia) and our nation’s energy policy.

I worked in bars and restaurants for about three years starting in my last year of college, as a server of varying sorts as well as a bartender. When I was interviewing for my first full-time public relations position, I was asked to prepare a “short presentation on something I’m knowledgeable on.” For 45 minutes, I talked with four senior executives about bartending and sold them on how that made me the best qualified candidate. I got the job.

I find the ever-evolving world of social media interesting since it changes daily and millennials are often a group that help shape and drive the social media world. And as the oldest cousin of 10, I like to know where my younger family members are socializing online these days – it helps make communicating at family reunions and holidays that much easier!
